

Alebrijes in Arrazola: Day of the Dead Workshop!
Step into the vibrant world of Arrazola, Oaxaca, where tradition and artistry come alive through the fascinating craft of Alebrijes. These colorful, fantastical wooden carvings are a hallmark of Oaxacan culture, bringing to life mythical creatures with intricate designs and vivid hues.
We are excited to invite you to a special workshop where you’ll not only learn about the history and techniques behind these unique sculptures but also immerse yourself in the rich culture of the community. Join us for a hands-on experience led by the talented Jimenez family, renowned local artisans who have been shaping the future of Alebrijes in Arrazola. They will guide you through every step of the process, from carving the wood to painting the final masterpiece.
This is a unique opportunity to connect with the community, learn from skilled artisans, and create your own beautiful Alebrije that reflects the spirit of the Day of the Dead.
Your experience will include the following:
- Round-trip transportation from/to Tlayudona in the center (M. Bravo St. #210C)
- Spanish/English translation if wanted/needed
- A delicious lunch
- Your own 3-5 inch hand-carved alebrije (There will be various models to choose from)
- Your choice of acrylic colors
- Brushes, palettes, aprons, and other necessary art supplies
- A presentation of the history of alebrijes in Arrazola and group instruction regarding painting techniques
- One-on-one help with your detailing technique
Children are welcome to participate in this course, but the rate remains the same since their participation requires the same material cost.
