Not Your Average Art Walk

Experience the magic of Oaxaca during the Day of the Dead season with a curated art walk that immerses you in the rich cultural legacy of this season. This exclusive opportunity offers a chance to witness vibrant altars adorned with intricate designs, colorful “flores de muerto,” and traditional marigolds, all set against the backdrop of Oaxaca’s stunning art and architecture. You’ll gain insider knowledge from a local expert with whom you will weave narratives of Oaxaca’s art, culture and politics during this especially-sensorial season! It’s one thing to stroll the streets of Oaxaca and bask in all of the visuals, but it’s another thing entirely to experience this curated art walk and have all of your behind-the-scenes questions answered!

Oaxaca wouldn’t be… “Oaxaca” without its colorful murals, eye-catching graffiti, and thought-provoking protest art lining the streets. It’s one thing to admire the aesthetics of these public pieces. But,  Who is this art intended for? What are its objectives? What are some of the differences between private and public art? How do these displays represent social issues born from conflicts around gender, class, gentrification, and capitalism, amongst other pertinent themes? How do we interact with art as visitors, versus when we are residents, or native-born inhabitants of a region?

These are only some of the questions that our host will address on this art walk. This is Not Your Average Art Walk: We are going beyond aesthetics to identify how artists are representing the most important issues facing Oaxaca and our community today. Our Art Walk host has a degree in museum curatorship and is well-versed in the local art scene. She will begin your walk with a chat & presentation in our cozy central space, which will provide you with some historical and visual context for what you are about to see on the streets and in the spaces along our route.

One thing about Oaxacan street art is that it is constantly evolving, so it’s a very current, honest depiction of the issues facing our community. Your host will lead you around the streets of Oaxaca’s city center on a route that incorporates a memorable collection of local art collectives, galleries, and street art.
