Hands in Clay: Atzompa
There are few things more satisfying and pure than creating art with earth. That being said, we are excited to work with three generations of women in this studio to bring to you our new “Hands in Clay” experiences, where we´ll have the opportunity to… get our hands into the clay!
Let´s learn about this ancestral practice and beautiful art form, followed by a chance to feel the earth between our fingers. Our hosts will explain how to transform earth into art, and you will get to make as many pieces as your heart desires. This experiences is for everyone, so beginners, you can enjoy getting the feel for this craft, and potters, you can learn new techniques or add an ancestral perspective to your practice!
Spend the afternoon with our host family, who will lead us through the opportunity to create ceramic pieces of our own in this dynamic household of all women.
Let’s immerse ourselves in the intersection between tradition, utility, design, and art. We´ll also learn about the larger context of sustainability in which this practice has existed for thousands of years.
Experience Includes:
- Transportation. Leaving from/returning to Tlayudona´s office.

*We are not responsible for accidents or pieces breaking in the kiln. Nature is at play here and there is a factor of chance, as well as weather and other influences. Our hosts will guide you on how to create pieces that will be most likely to dry and cook without cracking. We are responsible for delivering your pieces to Tlayudona for pick-up. If your group does not have 8 days of travel to guarantee your pieces’ arrival, we can arrange to ship your pieces to you at your expense. You are also welcome to take your pieces “as-is” (to be kept as a souvenir or fired for greater durability at a later point at your home location.
Important Notes:
Depending on the size of the piece you create, it will most likely require 1-2 weeks to dry fully before being able to be fired. You are welcome to take your piece “as-is” (to be kept as a souvenir or fired for greater durability at a later point), or to leave your piece in the studio for the next firing. If you are still in Oaxaca 1-2 weeks later when the pieces have been fired, we can arrange to have your piece brought to Tlayudona for pick-up at that time.
We can also arrange international shipping of your piece at an additional cost, but be aware that this service tends to be expensive. (If the pieces are fired prematurely, they will crack or even explode in the kiln.)
We are not responsible for your pieces. We will do our best to get them to you without cracks or breakage, but sometimes pieces do not make it through the firing process intact.
