Catrina (or Catrín) Make-up at Tlayudona (4- 5:30 p.m.)
Day of the Dead is such a precious time in Oaxaca, and this experience has been designed to live its beauty and significance in the most profound way possible… family style.
The Catrina is an iconic Mexican character created by the cartoon artist Jose Posada about 100 years ago as political satire and a commentary on issues of social class in Mexico, which was later popularized by Diego Rivera’s paintings. Over time, the complex history of this figure has had many significances, but has ultimately come to represent the face of the “muertos” holiday (although it’s not the first, as the celebration of life and death was previously commemorated by paying homage to an Aztec goddess).
There are so many traditions swirling around Oaxaca during the now world-famous Mexican celebration of the Day of the Dead. Whenever mentioned, it evokes images of traditional skulls, altars, and face paint. This experience is a fun way to participate in Mexican culture and one of the more modern local traditions surrounding the Day of the Dead.
Let’s experience “muertos” together, through the characterization of a symbolic character of Mexican culture: “La Catrina”.
We will meet at Tlayudona (M. Bravo Street #210 C, inside the San Cristobal plaza in Oaxaca’s city center). Here you will get your face painted by our Oaxacan artists, and begin to morph into a Catrina (or Catrín, in the masculine version) while we offer you some delicious local mezcal or coffee. All makeup, brushes and tools are provided. No need to bring your own.
Experience includes:
- Hypo-allergenic face paint and materials
- Complimentary mezcal and/or coffee
- The opportunity to have your make-up done by a professional local artist, as well as to learn about local customs and culture
Book your experience during the one-hour time slot that suits your schedule. We will do our best to follow our appointment schedule or be in contact with you via the email in your purchase if we happen to be running behind schedule.
You may book one or two people per time slot. We offer a 100 MXN discount per person for people who book in pairs.
We will have several suggested designs to choose from that are fully-included in your experience. Our artists will also have visuals of more elaborate designs to choose from at an additional cost (which can be paid in cash the day of your experience). If you have your own photo or image that you’d like to use as inspiration, feel free to reserve your experience and send it to us: tlayudona@gmail.com . We can quote you prior to your experience so that you will know how much your specific design will cost and there will be no surprises (although most catrín/catrina and typical designs fit within the experience cost).
