What does the word "tlayudona" mean?
In Oaxaca it's used to refer to a large, thick-framed person who boasts a lot of physical strength. The expression alludes to the giant tortilla called a tlayuda–because they're resistant and durable. They bend, but don't break.
It's considered a compliment here to be "tlayudón", and in this case with the added "a" in tlayudona, the word refers specifically to women.
Transform Your Trip to Oaxaca into An Authentic Cultural Experience with Tlayudona
Tlayudona is entering an exciting new chapter as we transition into becoming a non-profit organization in Oaxaca, renewing our commitment to cultural sustainability, women's empowerment, and regenerative travel. This transformation strengthens our mission to support local families and artisans while creating unforgettable cultural experiences in Oaxaca for conscious travelers. Whether you're seeking meaningful Oaxaca travel opportunities or looking to engage more deeply with authentic traditions, every experience you book with us directly fuels our social initiatives and ensures that our host families are fairly compensated for their time, skills, and knowledge.
This season, we're especially excited to share our upcoming Day of the Dead experiences in Oaxaca. Step beyond the busy city center and into the villages, where families welcome you into their homes to build their altars for this remarkable holiday. From preparing traditional foods to learning from ancestral practices and creating your own keepsakes, these immersive experiences connect you to the living traditions of Oaxaca in respectful and unforgettable ways. Join us for a unique approach to Oaxaca travel—one that supports communities, celebrates culture, and empowers women.
We invite you to check out our new Hands in Clay experience that couples this ancestral craft with a hike to the amazing archeological site in our host family's village.
As always, drop in to our office and say hello to Liz, Valeria, and Jen in 210 M. Bravo Street inside Plaza San Cristobal in Oaxaca's historic city center, and organize a once-in-a-lifetime experience that connects you with Oaxaca!
With love,
The Tlayudona Team

Why Choose Tlayudona?
There are plenty of conventional tourism companies out there. We aren't one of them. Here's why:
Community First
We are committed to making a positive, regenerative, and sustainable impact within our community.
Perspective
We have an all-women core team and work predominantly with women hosts so that our narratives are told and heard.
Authenticity
All of our experiences are designed by our hosts to provide you with an authentic lens into Oaxacan life.
Transparency
We pay our hosts more than half of the earnings of each experience. We value and remunerate their time, not just their products.
Experience
Each of our hosts has a lifetime of experience doing what they love, and Tlayudona has over 8 years of practice sharing this with you.
Love
We put our hearts into each connection we make. We have real relationships with our hosts, and together we create a community. You'll feel the difference.
