Black Clay Pottery Workshop in San Bartolo Coyotepec with Doña Sandra

Discover one of Oaxaca’s most iconic craft traditions during this hands-on black clay pottery workshop in San Bartolo Coyotepec, a village internationally known for its distinctive barro negro (black clay pottery).

In this immersive experience, you’ll travel just outside Oaxaca City to visit a family workshop where Doña Sandra and her relatives continue the ancestral tradition of shaping and polishing black clay by hand. This is a rare opportunity to learn directly from a family deeply rooted in the cultural heritage of Oaxacan pottery and artisan craft traditions.

Create Your Own Black Clay Pottery Piece

Your experience begins with a guided introduction to the materials and techniques used in traditional barro negro pottery.

Under Doña Sandra’s guidance, you will:

  • Participate in the traditional amasado process (kneading the clay)
  • Learn the foundations of black clay pottery techniques
  • Design and shape your own ceramic piece
  • Receive personalized instruction based on your experience level

Whether you are a complete beginner or have prior experience with ceramics, this pottery workshop in Oaxaca offers a creative and accessible introduction to one of Mexico’s most celebrated art forms.

Learn from a Family of San Bartolo Artisans

San Bartolo Coyotepec is renowned worldwide for its black clay pottery tradition, with many families dedicating their lives to preserving and evolving this ancestral craft.

During your visit, Doña Sandra and her family will share the history of barro negro pottery in Oaxaca, as well as the cultural importance of this art form within their community.

You may even be greeted by one of the workshop’s resident rescue iguanas as you work.

A Hands-On Cultural Experience in Oaxaca

This is more than a craft class—it is an authentic cultural experience in Oaxaca, offering insight into the daily life, traditions, and artistry of a working artisan family.

While you create your piece, you’ll enjoy a relaxed atmosphere with regional snacks and your choice of mezcal or agua fresca, making this a truly memorable and sensory experience.

Drying, Firing & Shipping Your Artwork

After the workshop, your piece will need time to dry naturally for approximately 3–4 weeks before it can be fired in the kiln.

You have several options for your finished piece:

  • Leave it with the family for firing and later pickup in Oaxaca City
  • Take it home as an unfired keepsake (“wet piece”)
  • Arrange international shipping at an additional cost

If you are still in Oaxaca when the firing is complete, we can coordinate pickup at Tlayudona.

Please note: premature firing may cause pieces to crack or break, which is why proper drying time is essential.
