Learn the Art of Alebrije Painting from a Fourth-Generation Oaxacan Artisan

This is Tlayudona's original alebrije painting experience in Oaxaca, created in collaboration with a family of master woodcarvers from San Martín Tilcajete, one of the most important alebrije-making villages in the Oaxaca Valley. In this hands-on workshop, you'll work directly with fourth-generation artisan Alex, who comes from a lineage of carvers dedicated to shaping and painting these iconic wooden figures for generations.

Discover the Journey from Copal Tree to Colorful Masterpiece

Your experience takes place at our space in Oaxaca City, where your chosen alebrije already carries a remarkable journey behind it—from sustainably harvested copal wood in the hills of Tilcajete to the artisan's workshop, and finally to your table. Alex will guide you through every stage of that process, explaining how carving, sanding, and painting techniques combine to give each piece its unique personality, symbolism, and vibrant colors.

Paint Your Own Authentic Alebrije

As you paint, you'll work at your own pace while learning the fundamentals of color composition, traditional Zapotec-inspired design motifs, and the symbolic language that makes every alebrije unique. Whether you're an experienced artist or picking up a paintbrush for the first time, Alex will provide guidance throughout the process in a relaxed and welcoming environment.

Enjoy Oaxacan Coffee, Ancestral Mezcal, and Genuine Cultural Exchange

Creativity flows alongside conversation as you enjoy locally sourced Oaxacan coffee and small-batch ancestral mezcal while painting your alebrije by hand. The atmosphere is informal and intimate—more like spending an afternoon with a local family than attending a formal art class. This personal connection is what makes the experience truly memorable.

Experience Rural Artisan Traditions Without Leaving Oaxaca City

This workshop is perfect for travelers who want to experience authentic Oaxacan craftsmanship while staying in the historic center. Without traveling to the villages, you'll spend meaningful time with an artisan whose family continues one of Oaxaca's most celebrated artistic traditions, gaining insights that few visitors have the opportunity to experience.

Learn the Living Tradition Behind Oaxaca's Alebrijes

Throughout the workshop, Alex shares stories about life in San Martín Tilcajete, how alebrije carving has evolved over generations, and the role these imaginative wooden creatures play in contemporary Oaxacan culture. By the end of the experience, you'll leave with your own hand-painted alebrije and a genuine connection to the family and traditions behind this remarkable art form.

What will you learn?
  • Fundamentals of color theory, design, and symbolism.
  • Interesting facts and anecdotes about the profession.
  • The significance these vibrant creatures hold today.
