Day of the Dead Catrina Makeup Experience in Oaxaca

Celebrate Day of the Dead in Oaxaca by transforming into one of Mexico's most iconic cultural figures during this authentic Catrina makeup experience in Oaxaca's historic city center.

Whether you're attending a comparsa, taking professional photographs, or simply immersing yourself in the magic of Día de Muertos, our talented local artists will help you become a beautifully painted Catrina or Catrín while sharing the fascinating history behind this beloved Mexican tradition.

The Story Behind La Catrina

La Catrina was originally created in the early 1900s by Mexican printmaker José Guadalupe Posada as a satirical illustration commenting on social class and the tendency to imitate European fashion. Years later, Diego Rivera helped transform her into one of Mexico's most recognizable cultural icons through his famous murals.

Today, La Catrina has become an internationally recognized symbol of Día de Muertos (Day of the Dead). While the celebration itself has Indigenous roots that long predate La Catrina, her elegant skeletal image now represents the idea that death is the great equalizer and reminds us to celebrate the lives of those who came before us.
