Hands on Dyeing and Weaving Workshop in Teotitlán (Two-Day Workshop)
Prepare organic wool dyes, learn Zapotec loom techniques, and create your own tapete art with Josefina from the first women’s weaving collective
Two-Day Natural Dyeing & Weaving Workshop in Teotitlán del Valle
If you've ever wondered how the brilliant reds, blues, yellows, and earth tones of Oaxaca's famous woven rugs are created, this immersive two-day natural dyeing and weaving workshop in Teotitlán del Valle offers something few visitors ever experience: the opportunity to create the colors yourself.
Hosted by Doña Josefina of the collective Las Mujeres que Tejen and her wonderful multi-generational family, this experience goes far beyond a traditional weaving demonstration. While many workshops allow you to observe the natural dyeing process, this extended experience gives you the time to work alongside the artisans, preparing and dyeing wool by hand before weaving with the colors you've created.
Day One: From Nature to Color
Your first day is dedicated entirely to the ancient art of natural dyeing, one of the traditions that has made Teotitlán del Valle famous throughout the world.
After meeting Doña Josefina and learning about the remarkable history of the women's weaving collective, you'll begin learning about the natural materials that have colored Zapotec textiles for centuries. Watch how cochineal insects become vibrant crimson, how indigo transforms into deep blue, and how marigolds, tree bark, leaves, flowers, and other local plants produce an incredible palette of natural colors.
Rather than simply watching a demonstration, you'll become part of the entire process. Grind pigments by hand using traditional stone tools, prepare dye baths over the fire, experiment with different ingredients, and dye your own skeins of wool under Doña Josefina's guidance. You'll quickly note that creating natural colors is both an art and a science, requiring patience, intuition, and generations of knowledge.
Throughout the day, Doña Josefina shares the stories behind these techniques, explaining how natural dyes continue to preserve both the environment and the cultural identity of Teotitlán's weaving families.
A homemade Oaxacan brunch and lunch, prepared by your hosts, provide the perfect opportunity to relax, share stories, and enjoy the warmth of the family between workshop sessions.
Day Two: Bringing Your Colors to Life
After creating your own naturally dyed wool, you'll return to the loom to learn the fundamentals of traditional Zapotec weaving.
Guided by Doña Josefina and her family, you'll learn basic weaving techniques while creating your own small textile using the wool you dyed. Because you've participated in every stage of the process—from raw pigment to finished textile—you'll gain a much deeper appreciation for the craftsmanship, precision, and time required to create every handmade rug in Teotitlán.
Along the way, you'll continue learning about the role of women in preserving these traditions, the history of the collective, and how weaving remains central to community life today.
This two-day immersion isn't simply about making a souvenir—it's about understanding an entire artistic tradition through your own hands.
Unlike shorter workshops that focus primarily on weaving or demonstrate the dyeing process, this two-day experience allows you to fully immerse yourself in one of Oaxaca's most treasured textile traditions. By creating your own natural pigments and weaving with the wool you've dyed yourself, you'll leave with far more than a handmade textile—you'll leave with an understanding of the knowledge, artistry, and cultural heritage woven into every thread.
