Farm-to-Table Cooking Experience in Oaxaca: Tamales, Salsas Tortillas & Milpa Life with Doña Juana
If you’re short on time but want a truly authentic cooking experience in Oaxaca, this is one of Tlayudona’s most complete rural food workshops—combining tamale making, tortilla preparation, and salsa making in a traditional outdoor family kitchen rooted in the milpa agricultural system.
Just outside Oaxaca City in Yatareni, you’ll visit Doña Juana and her family, who cultivate corn, beans, and squash using the ancestral milpa system. This is a genuine farm-to-table Oaxaca experience, set in a working rural home surrounded by fruit trees, animals, and daily family life.
Combined Cooking Experience: Tamales, Tortillas & Salsas
This workshop brings together two of our most popular experiences into one:
You’ll learn to prepare two traditional Oaxacan tamales, you’ll also make:
- Handmade tortillas from freshly ground corn
- Traditional Oaxacan salsas
Doña Juana guides you step by step, sharing techniques passed down through generations. The corn is prepared in advance at the mill so everything can be completed in one immersive day.
Milpa & Rural Life Experience
Beyond cooking, you’ll explore Doña Juana’s land and learn about the milpa system, one of Mexico’s most important traditional agricultural practices.
Depending on the season, you’ll see corn, beans, and squash growing together, along with seed-saving practices and insights into rural Oaxacan food culture.
Farm-to-Table Meal
After cooking, you’ll enjoy a full traditional meal prepared with the family, including your handmade tamales, fresh tortillas, salsas, and agua de sabor.
This is a true farm-to-table experience in Oaxaca, where food is shared, not just served.
