Paint & Sip Alebrijes: Day of the Dead Edition in Oaxaca

Celebrate Day of the Dead in Oaxaca by joining this vibrant Paint & Sip Alebrije Workshop, hosted by Tlayudona and a family of renowned woodcarvers from the village of Arrazola. This seasonal edition of our popular hands-on experience offers you the chance to paint your very own Day of the Dead–themed alebrije in the heart of Oaxaca City.

You’ll begin with a brief introduction to the art of alebrije-making—a traditional Zapotec craft that transforms the sacred copal wood into intricate, hand-carved creatures full of color and symbolism. Then, it’s time to get creative! Choose your alebrije, grab a paintbrush, and bring it to life using traditional colors and patterns. This is an interactive art workshop—no previous painting experience necessary!

To keep things festive, you’ll enjoy Oaxacan coffee or a complimentary mezcal as you paint. It’s the perfect way to unwind, learn about local traditions, and take home a one-of-a-kind souvenir created by your own hands.

Experience Includes

  • Welcome beverage: Oaxacan coffee or artisan mezcal
  • Your choice of a 3–5 inch alebrije (larger/specialty carved pieces available for upgrade)
  • All materials needed: paint, brushes, apron/smock, and design guides
  • Instruction from a master alebrije artisan from Arrazola
  • Brief presentation on the history, carving process, and cultural significance of alebrijes
  • A print-out of patterns and color references for inspiration
