Open-Air Mezcal Immersion in Miahuatlan
Venture beyond Oaxaca's Mezcal Route to a remote family-owned palenque. Visit agave fields, taste artisanal mezcal, and share meals with local producers.
An Off-the-Beaten-Path Mezcal Adventure
If you're looking for a real adventure rather than the typical Mezcal Route tour, this experience was designed for you. Leave the crowds behind and journey deep into rural Oaxaca, where mezcal remains a way of life rather than a tourist attraction. This full-day adventure takes you far beyond the well-known distilleries outside Oaxaca City to visit a family-owned palenque surrounded by agave fields, mountain landscapes, and quiet rural communities rarely visited by travelers.
We'll meet at the Tlayudona office (210C M. Bravo Street, inside Plaza San Cristóbal) at 8:00 a.m., where we can prepare you some freshly brewed local coffee before beginning our drive into Oaxaca's distant mezcal-producing countryside.
Farm-to-table Breakfast
After approximately two and a half hours, we'll arrive at the palenque, where the family of maestros mezcaleros will welcome us with a traditional almuerzo—a hearty Mexican-style brunch prepared in their home.
Unlike commercial distilleries, this working palenque changes with the seasons. Because you'll be visiting an active production site, every experience is unique. Depending on what's happening that day, you'll witness different stages of the mezcal-making process, allowing you to follow the remarkable transformation from agave plant to bottle in real time.
Teamwork and Life Stories
Our hosts are internationally respected maestros mezcaleros—a husband and wife team whose seamless and often unspoken teamwork is admirable–and whose spirits are sought after by premium brands around the world. While they embrace select innovations that improve quality, they intentionally preserve many ancestral production methods because they believe they create the complex flavors that define exceptional young and wild (silvestre) mezcals. Throughout the day, they'll share their philosophy on craftsmanship, sustainability, and why tradition still matters in modern mezcal production. The familial conversation is the heart of this experience. It reminds us of being at a table with our grandparents, where stories about recent events are woven with anecdotes from the past.
Venture Amongst the Rolling Hills of Agaves
For those with an adventurous spirit, we'll have the opportunity to venture into the surrounding countryside to explore the agave fields themselves. Depending on the season, this may involve walking through rugged terrain or traveling farther into the hills to observe cultivated and wild agave varieties growing in their natural environment. This portion of the experience offers a rare glimpse into the landscapes where mezcal begins its journey. If there are agaves ready for cutting, you will get the chance to practice your skills with a machete if you’d like.
(Please bring comfortable walking shoes, a hat, sunscreen, and a sense of adventure.)
Lunch on the Palenque
Following our exploration, we'll gather once again around the family table for a home-cooked lunch prepared by the matriarch of the household using fresh local ingredients. As with every Tlayudona experience, the meal is about more than great food—it's an opportunity to share stories, ask questions, and experience Oaxacan hospitality firsthand.
The Real Deal Tasting
The day concludes with a guided tasting of the family's artisanal mezcals, where you'll learn to distinguish the unique flavors created by different agave species, and production techniques. If you discover a favorite, you'll have the opportunity to purchase it directly from the maestro mezcalero, ensuring your purchase directly supports the family who crafted them. (Sometimes they have bottled & sealed products available, although in general they are happy to extend their local prices on wholesale mezcal, fresh from the jug (a granel) if you bring your own empty bottles. This is a true tasting on a rural palenque, which has little to do with the culture of connoisseurs and urban mezcal trends.
We'll return to Oaxaca City in the evening, bringing home not only exceptional mezcal but also a deeper appreciation for the people, landscapes, and traditions that make Oaxaca one of the world's great mezcal-producing regions.
Perfect for adventurous travelers, photographers, food lovers, and anyone seeking an authentic rural Oaxaca experience, this immersive journey offers a side of mezcal country that few visitors ever have the opportunity to discover. This is one of our farthest and most remote one-day experiences, but this host couple is also one of the families closest to our hearts and our mission at Tlayudona. They do not receive any travelers outside of our Tlayudona team visitors because of the distance from the city, and are so genuinely welcoming and grateful for our visits. The experience makes for a long day, but is exactly the type of unique and deeply-meaningful interaction that will stick with you for a lifetime.
