Duration: 5 hours
Minimum participants: 2
From $4,400 MXN per person

Step into the brilliant colors, sacred aromas, and living traditions of Oaxaca’s Day of the Dead season. This exclusive, seasonal workshop takes you out of the city and into the historic Zapotec weaving village of Teotitlán del Valle for a hands-on immersion into the living art of ancestral textiles.

Hosted by master weaver Doña Josefina and her multi-generational family, this experience is designed for travelers who want to explore the profound spiritual connection between nature, craftsmanship, and memory during Mexico's most sacred holiday.

The Colors of Remembrance: Dyeing with Sacred Flora

While traditional workshops showcase the year-round palette of textiles, this special edition focuses entirely on the botanical elements intimately tied to Día de Muertos celebrations and family ofrendas (altars).

Under Doña Josefina's expert guidance, you will explore how the natural world is transformed into a visual celebration. You will work with:

  • Cempasúchil (Marigold Flowers): The iconic golden blossom whose bright hue and intense fragrance guide the souls of ancestors back home.
  • Flor de Muerto (Tarragon Flowers): A seasonal wildflower that brings delicate, earthy yellow tones to the dye pot.
  • Walnut Shells & Local Bark: Ancient organic mordants and materials that create the deep, warm, grounding earth tones characteristic of traditional autumn textiles.

As you prepare the dye baths over an open fire, Doña Josefina will pass down her family's ancestral knowledge, explaining the delicate science and intuition required to balance heat, water, and plant matter to reveal vibrant, lasting color profiles.

Hands-On Alchemical Experimentation

This is a fully collaborative, interactive studio workspace. Doña Josefina will provide premium, hand-carded and hand-spun local wool for you to experiment with throughout the day.

Bring Your Own Fibers: Guests are warmly invited to bring along their own small pieces of fabric or yarn to dye. To ensure the pigments bond successfully with the fibers, your materials must be 100% natural with absolutely no synthetic blends. Excellent options include pure wool, raw cotton, wild silk, and woven linen.

An Ancestral Feast: Day of the Dead Culinary Traditions

The sensory journey transitions from the dye pots to the family dining table. To conclude your day in the village, Doña Josefina’s family will prepare a special, traditional meal inspired entirely by the seasonal culinary heritage of Teotitlán del Valle in a warm atmosphere where you can share stories, ask questions, and experience the depth of Oaxacan hospitality through the eyes of a local family.
