Alebrije Painting Workshop in Arrazola with the Jimenez Family
Paint your own alebrije in Arrazola, Oaxaca. Join the famous Jimenez family for a hands-on woodcarving and painting workshop.
Step into the vibrant village of San Antonio Arrazola, the historic cradle of Oaxacan alebrijes. These fantastical, brilliantly hued wooden creatures are far more than beautiful folk art—they are physical manifestations of Zapotec cosmic beliefs, local myths, and deep-seated family legacies.
Tlayudona invites you to escape the city center and journey directly to the source for an intimate, hands-on masterclass led by the renowned Jimenez family. As pioneering local artisans, they have spent generations shaping the past, present, and future of woodcarving in Arrazola. Under their guidance, you will learn to bridge ancestral heritage with your own creative spirit.
The Heritage of Arrazola
Your day begins with a short drive out of Oaxaca's historic center into the quiet, creative valley of Arrazola. Upon arrival at the workshop, the Jimenez family will open their doors to share a comprehensive presentation on the history of alebrijes. You'll learn how raw copal wood is sustainably harvested from the surrounding hills, dried, and carefully carved using machetes and specialized knives to reveal the creature hidden within the grain. Don Isa’s love for his family’s artistic heritage is abundant as he walks you through his family’s personal museum collection.
Hands-on Design & Master Detailing
After exploring the family's personal collection, it's time to create your own piece of Oaxacan culture. You will select a 3-to-5-inch hand-carved copal wood figure from various seasonal models. The family will walk you through traditional color composition and layout strategies before you begin painting. Working with high-quality acrylics, you'll block out base colors and move into the most mesmerizing phase: master detailing. The Jimenez family will provide close, one-on-one assistance to help you perfect the incredibly fine geometric linework, dots, and patterns that give these spirits their signature movement and texture.
A Shared Local Lunch
Midway through the workshop, you'll put down your brushes to share a delicious, home-cooked local lunch with your hosts. This informal setting allows creativity to blend seamlessly into conversation, letting you ask questions about village life, family traditions, and how the art form continues to adapt to contemporary Mexican life. Doña Mica generally prepares the most mouthwatering memelas on her comal, always offering more servings than we can handle!
A Note on Small-Group Intimacy: To ensure every guest receives personalized, one-on-one detailing assistance from the master artisans, this workshop is strictly limited to a maximum of 8 participants. It is an immersive, focused environment rather than a large commercial tour.
