Paint and Sip: Alebrijes for the Day of the Dead

We are back in Tlayudona with Alex and our favorite alebrije-painting family from the village of Tilcajete for this workshop. This seasonal variation is oriented toward Day of the Dead, with special figures to paint in commemoration of the holiday. (We will also have typical alebrijes available for painting.)

You´ll get the basics–color, design, and some anecdotal information about the process that transforms copal into a woodcarving. This experience will launch directly into the practical side of this craft as you paint your piece. You´ll also get to sip delicious local coffee or mezcal while you paint!

This Paint & Sip: Alebrijes workshop is hands on, although it´s prefaced by a brief presentation about this art form.

One of our master painters from the Velasco Sosa family in Tilcajete will guide you as you choose your piece and immerse yourself in the creative process of transforming the woodcarving into an alebrije.

Course includes:

• Oaxacan Coffee or Mezcal
• Paint, brushes, smock, and any other materials necessary to paint your alebrije
• Your choice of a 3-5 inch alebrije (We will have special, more intricately-carved seasonal pieces available at an additional price, in addition to the variety of alebrijes that are 100% included in the cost of this experience.)
• Instruction by a master alebrije-maker from Tilcajete
• A print-out of patterns/colors to guide you while you paint
