Natural Dye Series: Indigo
Elsa, our natural dye host, has taken the best of generations of ancestral knowledge from Teotitlán combined with dyeing expertise from around the world to her workshop space in Oaxaca’s city center.
It’s a great opportunity to stick within walking distance and still experience the natural dyeing processes that Oaxaca has become renowned for over the years.
In this first edition of our natural dye series with Elsa, we’ll be working with indigo, or añil, as it’s referred to locally. Each guest will receive 4 cloth napkins that measure 30 x 30cm, woven by pedal with 100% cotton. Part of what makes this experience so amazing is that the materials are locally sourced and exemplify ecological processes.
The workshop will open with an introduction about indigo in Oaxaca, where it comes from and its process of growth, harvest, and fermentation. Elsa will prepare the dye bath, and you’ll get to use a combination of traditional shibori techniques to dye your napkins. You’ll finish with 4 unique designs.
