The Art of Piñata Making

Join us for an authentic piñata making experience with Doña Inés in the local village of Yatareni. We love working in Yatareni, because it’s under twenty minutes from the city center but really gives you a taste of rural Oaxacan life. For this experience, we will journey to where Inés makes magic with newspaper, cardboard, and traditional clay pots. Our host transforms these household items into a work of art!

Whether you want to bust open your piñata during your stay or take it home as a souvenir, this craft has a rich local history and is a wonderful way to spend an afternoon immersing yourself in Oaxacan culture.

You will begin by choosing from Doña Ines´ collection of piñata forms. She has done us the favor of starting your process for you so that you do not have to plan for two days of drying paper maché into your itinerary! If you are booking this experience in advance and would like to work with a specific shape, character, or form, Ines is happy to oblige as long as she has some prior notice.

Unleash your creativity with the decoration process! You will learn about different piñata decorating techniques and be able to choose from an area of paints and tissue-paper decoration styles to create your masterpiece.

This is a great activity for families and small groups who want to get their hands into something local, fun, and easy to catch on to. Inés provides us with a snack and a local drink made from ingredients from her village. Adults get a special courtesy mezcal while you work.
