Come and learn about the illustrious and enticing Indigo with Claire Fredrick from “Wax and Wane” in the beautiful Oaxacan campo. You’ll learn about the history, chemistry, and artistic uses of Indigofera tinctoria while also learning simple Japanese shibori techniques to make beautiful marks on fabric. This class will give you all the necessary information so that you can go home and begin your own indigo vat and natural dye artistic practice.
Fabric will be provided. Participants may bring one small item of your choice to dye in the vat after using the provided fabric.
We will provide water, traditional Oaxacan food made by Doña Juana on-site, and “agua de sabor” to round out your experience in the open-air campo of Oaxaca.
Claire Fredrick is a textile artist and educator originally from Chicago and currently living in Oaxaca. She co-founded Wax & Wane Fiber, a natural dye textile company turned online natural dye project and travel diary. She loves surface design and finding new ways to create pattern on textiles.
